ORANJESTAD – Aruba has implemented stricter international safety regulations for vessels operating in the offshore sector. The new rules, which have been adopted alongside Curaçao and Sint Maarten, introduce the IP-Code, a standard established by the International Maritime Organization. These regulations specifically apply to boats transporting industrial personnel to projects such as offshore wind and solar parks.
According to information published by Aruba.nu, the policy change addresses the rapid growth of offshore activities worldwide. Under the updated framework, vessels carrying more than 12 industrial workers must comply with more severe safety standards and obtain special certification. The new requirements also cover additional protocols for inspections, crew training, safety procedures, and the availability of rescue equipment on board.
A significant change in the new regulations involves the reclassification of personnel and vessels. Industrial workers are no longer considered regular passengers, meaning the ships now fall under the category of cargo ships with safety norms specifically adapted for offshore work. The new rules officially entered into force on May 1 of this year.
