ORANJESTAD (AAN) – An Aruba delegation met with the Fixed Committee for Kingdom Relations of the Eerste Kamer in the Netherlands to discuss prosperity and well-being within the Kingdom. The meeting took place on Tuesday afternoon as part of the delegation’s current visit to The Hague.
Following the session, former Vice Prime Minister and Minister of Kingdom Relations Johan Remkes expressed a positive view on the discussions regarding the Kingdom’s future. He described the consultation as sincere and strong, emphasizing the connection between the Netherlands and the Caribbean part of the Kingdom.
“The conversation was open and informative,” Remkes stated. Topics included the dispute resolution mechanism and the upcoming Kingdom Conference. Remkes highlighted the distinction between economic prosperity and general well-being, noting these issues are relevant across the Caribbean region.
A significant portion of the consultation addressed the socio-economic situation in the islands, specifically poverty and creating future perspectives for the Aruban population. Remkes emphasized that the Kingdom must share responsibility for these challenges. “It is not just about economic growth, but whether people feel a sense of perspective in their daily lives,” he said.
Discussions also focused on clarifying the added value of the Kingdom to citizens in both the Netherlands and the Caribbean. Remkes cited the geopolitical tensions surrounding Venezuela as an example where Aruba experienced the importance of the Kingdom’s protective umbrella.
Furthermore, Remkes argued that the Netherlands should demonstrate greater appreciation for the expertise and experience present within the Caribbean part of the Kingdom.
