Aruban author Quito Nicolaas has begun work on what he describes as his final book, an autobiography covering his life and development as a writer.
New book will trace a life in writing
Nicolaas plans to recount his childhood, youth, adolescence and adulthood, along with the experiences that shaped his work, according to 24ora.
The autobiography is also expected to review his publications and describe the practical realities of a writer’s life. Nicolaas said working on the manuscript has prompted him to reflect on his own development and on the discipline his parents taught their children.
Hardship and travel shaped the author’s career
The source account says Nicolaas will revisit his years in the Netherlands, including periods when he made sacrifices to afford books. His travels to the United States, Costa Rica, Colombia and Venezuela will also form part of the story.
He participated in international congresses and conferences and said those experiences taught him that success depends partly on how a person structures a project. Nicolaas, who was born and raised in Aruba, continued visiting the island while building recognition for essays presented and published across Europe, the Caribbean and Latin America.
Research will determine the publication timeline
Nicolaas said an autobiography requires time because the author must reconstruct a full life, research events, locate photographs and other material, and verify the account. No publication date was announced.
