ORANJESTAD (AAN): Parliamentarian Evelyn Wever-Croes has raised concerns about the growing impact of over tourism on the quality of life in Aruba.
During a press conference, the MEP faction leader questioned the current direction of tourism development on the island. While acknowledging that tourism remains Aruba’s main economic pillar, she emphasized that its rapid growth is putting pressure on infrastructure, housing, traffic, and the environment.
The Over Tourism Aruba Impact is becoming increasingly visible, with issues such as overcrowded natural sites, disturbances from Airbnb rentals in residential areas, and rising housing prices making it difficult for locals, especially young people, to find affordable homes.
Wever-Croes pointed out that the previously introduced “High Value, Low Impact” tourism model aimed to generate more economic value while reducing pressure on the island. However, she argued that current policies appear to be moving in the opposite direction, focusing on increasing the number of visitors rather than managing sustainable growth.
She also noted that despite being in government for a year, there is still no finalized tourism strategy, which continues to increase pressure on the country and its residents.
The Over Tourism Aruba Impact debate highlights the need for a clear vision and effective policy to ensure sustainable tourism development that benefits both the economy and the local community.
Wever-Croes concluded by urging for a shift toward a more balanced approach, asking whether Aruba should focus on attracting more tourists or creating greater value from tourism.
