ORANJESTAD (AAN) – A 60-year-old man dies while in police custody at San Nicolas Police Station on Wednesday evening, according to an official statement released by the Aruba Police Force (Cuerpo Policial).
Police said that at approximately 8:20 p.m., officers conducting a routine inspection of detainees in the holding cells discovered that the male detainee was unresponsive. The officer in charge was immediately notified, and the police communications center alerted the appropriate authorities.
Following the discovery, the district chief, a forensic physician, forensic police investigators, and the Landsrecherche (National Criminal Investigation Department) responded to the scene to begin an official investigation into the circumstances surrounding the death.
The Victim Support Department (Slachtofferhulp) also attended the scene to provide guidance and assistance to the deceased man’s family during the difficult situation.
Police confirmed that the deceased was a 60-year-old man born in Aruba. No additional information regarding the cause of death has been released at this time.
The case remains under investigation by Landsrecherche, which is responsible for conducting independent investigations involving incidents in police custody.
The Aruba Police Force extended its condolences to the family and loved ones of the deceased.
