ORANJESTAD (AAN) – Kapel Emanuel has officially been declared a protected monument, recognizing its importance to Aruba’s architectural, cultural and religious heritage.
Yvonne Webb-Kock described the designation as a proud moment for her family and for Aruba’s preservation efforts. As the daughter of architect Virgilio Kock and a former director of Monumenten Bureau Aruba, she said the recognition honors both the building’s design and its historical value.
According to Webb-Kock, Virgilio Kock was only 25 years old when he designed the chapel in the 1960s. Inspired by the image of an angel, he created a modern structure that incorporated Catholic symbolism while reflecting Aruba’s natural surroundings.
She noted that the monument designation followed years of research and documentation to confirm the chapel’s historical and architectural significance. Webb-Kock said preserving landmarks like Kapel Emanuel helps protect Aruba’s identity and ensures future generations can appreciate the island’s rich heritage.
