Edwin Willems, the son of a victim from a fatal hit-and-run incident in January, has publicly challenged the narrative presented during a recent local opinion program. The collision, which occurred on January 4, 2026, resulted in the deaths of Josely Paulina Vasquez Gonzalez, 65, and Carlos David Vialez Valerio, 54. The driver involved, Chania Fernandes, is currently in custody while the legal process continues.
The controversy arose after a local entertainment host used his platform to defend Fernandes. During the broadcast, the presenter suggested the victims misjudged the crossing, stating they might still be alive had they remained stationary. He argued that the driver was traveling within his own lane at 101 km/h, which he characterized as “not extreme,” and claimed Fernandes was unaware he had struck a person.
The host further asserted that while the driver had consumed alcohol, he was not drunk, stating he had two drinks and blew a level of “300 and something,” which he described as “almost nothing.” The presenter also claimed the driver called his family and began to lay part of the responsibility for the incident on the victims.
