ORANJESTAD (AAN) – The Government of Aruba is reinforcing its commitment to preserve the island’s historical and cultural heritage through a new program focused on awareness and protection of national monuments. The announcement was made by Prime Minister Mike Eman at the Monumenten Bureau Aruba (MBA) office in Schelpstraat, alongside MBA Director Raul Gei, Pastor Andres Makowiec, and monument restoration architect Daphne Every.

Prime Minister Eman emphasized that while Aruba faces many developmental challenges, safeguarding its heritage and cultural identity is fundamental. “Our monuments are more than stone and cement. They are tangible witnesses of our history, culture, and the Aruban spirit expressed over generations in literature, music, art, and architecture. It is vital that we preserve, restore, and protect this inheritance,” he said.

As part of the program, a continuous monument designation process will be implemented, placing official markers on buildings granted protected status. Public sessions will educate residents on the significance, rights, and support available for monument owners, including financial assistance for restoration.

During the announcement, Kapel Emanuel in San Nicolas was officially designated as Aruba’s next monument. The initiative honors the previous MBA director Yvonne Webb-Kock and her father, architect Virgilio Kock. Restoration and historical research were conducted with the support of architect Daphne Every and with the approval of the Catholic Diocese.

Pastor Makowiec expressed pride in the recognition, noting the chapel’s unique triangular design inspired by the Holy Trinity and its cultural and spiritual significance. Director Raul Gei highlighted the importance of community participation in learning about Aruba’s heritage.

Prime Minister Eman concluded by honoring Virgilio Kock and celebrating the cultural and architectural legacy of Aruba, emphasizing the community’s responsibility to safeguard what has been inherited. An informational session for the public will be held at MFA Noord on Wednesday at 6:30 PM.
