Explore Aruba: Hidden Gems Beyond the Beaches
3
VIEWS

When people think of Aruba, they often picture white-sand beaches, turquoise waters, and sunny days averaging 82°F year-round. But this Caribbean island—just 15 miles north of Venezuela and spanning 70 square miles—offers much more than its famous shoreline. From natural wonders to cultural landmarks, here are some of Aruba’s must-see attractions beyond the beach.

🌿 Arikok National Park

Covering nearly 20% of the island (34 sq. km.), Arikok National Park is home to hiking trails, guided ranger tours, and incredible biodiversity. Visitors will encounter native wildlife such as the Aruban whiptail lizard (cododo), the Aruban cat eye snake (santanero), and the endangered rattlesnake (cascabel). The park also preserves historic sites showcasing Aruba’s indigenous heritage. Whether hiking or driving, the park leads to stunning beaches like Dos Playa and Daimara Beach. Entrance is free for guided tours, and the Visitors’ Center provides interactive exhibits. More info: www.acf.aw.

🌊 The Natural Bridge

Carved over thousands of years by pounding waves and trade winds, Aruba’s Natural Bridge was once one of the largest coral limestone bridges in the world—spanning over 100 feet and standing 23 feet above sea level. Though it collapsed in 2005, the site remains a popular photo spot, with the adjacent Baby Bridge still intact and attracting visitors. It’s free to visit and open year-round, with nearby snack stalls offering refreshments.

🙏 The Lourdes Grotto

Located in Seroe Preto, this shrine was built in 1958 by parishioners guided by Father Erkamp. A 700-kilo statue of the Virgin Mary was carefully placed inside the grotto’s rocky formation. Every year on February 11 (Feast of Our Lady of Lourdes), a procession begins at St. Theresita Church in San Nicolas and ends at the grotto with a special mass. Visitors can stop daily to view or photograph the grotto—just ensure you park safely by the roadside.

From desert landscapes and ancient caves to sacred landmarks and cultural traditions, Aruba is far more than “just a beach destination.” Exploring its hidden gems allows travelers to experience the island’s true character and spirit.
