Parliament Debates 'Care for the Elderly Aruba'

Last Wednesday, Minister of Social Affairs Mervin Wyatt-Ras was in Parliament to discuss the management of care for the elderly Aruba.

Evelyn Wever-Croes, leader of the MEP faction, expressed her thoughts: “I have listened attentively to understand what steps we are taking to improve the quality of life for our elderly citizens. The challenges and responsibilities are significant.”

She continued, “Under the leadership of our government, Cabinet Wever-Croes 2, we established a special ministry for care for the elderly Aruba, which unfortunately was eliminated by this current government. We introduced the Directie Ouderenzaken, a project that I am very proud of, and even more proud to see the government continuing this initiative.”

However, Wever-Croes shared her disappointment, stating, “After one year of the AVP-Futuro government, I had hoped that concrete plans would already be in place to improve the situation for the elderly, but this has not happened.”

She added, “Today, I heard the minister say ’73 times’ that they are ‘surveying,’ but after a year of governance, are they still just ‘surveying’? That’s not good. This government has a maximum of two more years to implement their vision; if not, they’ll fall short. Because after the campaign, elections are coming.”

The issue is urgent, and considering the failures of the government, Parliament presented four motions. “I am very proud to see these motions, which call for specific strategies and actions within two months, as well as motions to generate revenue to achieve the goals. All four motions were approved unanimously,” concluded the leader of the MEP faction at the end of the session.
