NoticiaCla reported on November 7, citing sources close to the process within the party, that Minister René Herdé also plans to step down when the year turns on January 1, following the same timeline as Prime Minister Mike Eman. The report has not been officially confirmed, and the party has so far remained publicly silent on the subject.
Herdé holds portfolios including infrastructure and communications. If both he and Eman leave, the AVP-led government would need to fill three posts at the start of the year: prime minister, justice minister, and Herdé’s portfolios.
Role was meant to be temporary
According to NoticiaCla, there have been concerns within Herdé’s office for some time about the pressure and volume of his workload, with sources pointing to very long hours and a possible effect on his health. Herdé took on the role temporarily after party colleague Mike de Meza did not pass ministerial screening; the understanding, the report says, was that Herdé would step aside once De Meza’s situation was resolved.
Three posts to fill
Arthur Dowers continues to be named as the most likely successor to Eman as prime minister, although the party has not officially announced a replacement. NoticiaCla reports that AVP parliamentarians including Jennifer Arends-Reyes and Clifford Heyliger are among those interested in ministerial posts, which would in turn open seats in Parliament. The official reason for Herdé’s planned departure is not known.
