ELMAR and KIVI Visit EPB and EPI to Inspire the Next Generation: Connecting with Engineers Week

In connection with Engineers Week, a global celebration of the engineering profession, NV ELMAR, together with the Royal Institute of Engineers (KIVI), visited several technical schools on the island, including EPB Hato, EPI, and EPB San Nicolas, to share knowledge and inspire the next generation of engineers.

During the visit, NV ELMAR and KIVI hosted an educational workshop divided into two sections. The first part focused on electricity distribution, explaining how the system works and how it is connected to the national “grid.” While technical students typically learn about installing a house or property system, NV ELMAR showed them how electricity distribution at a national level is unique and more extensive.

The workshop was not just a theoretical presentation, but also a “hands-on” experience where students built a miniature electricity distribution system. According to Audrey Croes, PR & Communications Officer of NV ELMAR, the enthusiasm was evident:

“This week is Engineers Week, with two main goals: to celebrate the work of engineers across Aruba and inspire the next generation. We appreciate seeing the interest and eagerness to learn something new.”

Jonathan van der Linden, Operations Manager of NV ELMAR, explained that this initiative is part of a larger project to involve Aruba’s students in the celebration. The first day started at EPB Hato, followed by visits to EPI and EPB San Nicolas.

He mentioned that the goal is to give students more information about how ELMAR’s grid works and to encourage them to consider a future in engineering.

“The world of engineering is vast. There are many paths you can follow. There will be difficult moments, but there are plenty of opportunities and specializations to choose from.”

From an educational perspective, the students expressed their appreciation for the continued collaboration with ELMAR. For several years, ELMAR has provided internship opportunities for students, with many completing their studies and continuing their professional careers at ELMAR.

Elthon Lampe, a member of KIVI, noted that KIVI is an engineering association in the Netherlands, and Aruba is part of this network. This year, during Engineers Week, ELMAR and KIVI chose to visit the schools directly to show how the electricity distribution system works and also discuss new technologies that can help Aruba progress in electricity usage.

Inspiring the Future

With this initiative, NV ELMAR and KIVI reaffirm their commitment to strengthening Aruba’s technical sector, raising awareness about the importance of engineering, and motivating young people to pursue a career that is essential for the development and sustainability of our country.
