Aruba police have launched an investigation into the deaths of two American tourists from the Chicago area who were staying at the St. Regis Hotel on the island.
According to authorities, police were contacted by hotel staff around 8:45 a.m. on Sunday after reports that a guest had fallen from a balcony. Upon arrival, officers found a male U.S. citizen deceased outside the hotel.
Investigators then proceeded to the hotel room associated with the man, where they discovered a female guest deceased inside. Police later confirmed that the two individuals were spouses.
The victims were identified as B. Jozic and C. Jozic. Family members later identified the woman as Cristina Gatia, describing her as a mother of five and a grandmother.
While the investigation remains ongoing, local media outlets in Aruba have reported that authorities are examining the case as a possible murder-suicide. Officials have stated that many details surrounding the incident are still unclear.
The couple was known in the United States as the owners of Steel Fitness, a gym located in Morton Grove, Illinois. In the days following the incident, a memorial has grown outside the gym as community members mourn their loss.
Aruba police have not released further information at this time and continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the deaths.
