ORANJESTAD (AAN) – Businessman Alex Croes delivered one of the most notable remarks during an information session on HOFA and LWHO, organized by the PPA parliamentary faction to provide the public with greater clarity about the potential impact of the proposed legislation.
During the event, Croes reflected on the importance of Aruba’s autonomy and raised concerns about the possible consequences of losing financial independence under the proposed framework.
According to Croes, the central question is straightforward: “If we lose financial autonomy, what remains of our Status Aparte?” He explained that autonomy is not merely a political concept but the ability and right of a people to make decisions about their own future.
Croes reminded attendees that Aruba’s Status Aparte was achieved through years of effort, sacrifice, and determination by previous generations. For that reason, he argued that any measure that could limit Aruba’s ability to manage its own financial affairs should be examined carefully and responsibly.
The businessman emphasized the importance of public awareness and participation in discussions surrounding HOFA. He stated that citizens should be well informed before decisions with long-term consequences are made.
His remarks echoed the broader message of the meeting, where PPA leader Eduard Pieters stressed that the objective was not to create division or political conflict, but rather to provide information and encourage public dialogue.
Croes concluded by encouraging the community to protect the rights and achievements gained through Aruba’s historical struggle for self-governance. He urged citizens to remain engaged and ensure that future generations do not lose the autonomy that previous generations worked hard to secure.
