Afiba documentary screenings are planned for November 7 and 8 in Aruba through a collaboration between Biblioteca Nacional Aruba and Fundacion Museo Arubano, according to 24ora. The film, Afiba de oudste vrouw van Paramaribo, is by filmmaker and writer Ida Does.
A life recovered through research
The report says the documentary grew from Joan Wijnsack’s research into a photograph held in the Rijksmuseum archive. It follows Afiba, a woman born into slavery who lived at least 105 years and was the mother of eleven children. Does used archival documents and assistance from other researchers to reconstruct her life.
Screenings linked to heritage work
The presentation forms part of E Testigo Silencioso, which includes restoration, education and awareness work. The source describes restoration at Fort Zoutman and updates to educational material on slavery in collaboration with the University of Aruba. Organisers hope the film will encourage discussion of memory and identity. The report does not provide a screening timetable or booking instructions.
