A presentation of Echoes of Africa at Aruba’s National Archives drew attention to Afro-Creole spiritual traditions and the preservation of cultural knowledge, 24ora reported on November 3. The book is by author Bob Harms.
Research into inherited traditions
According to the report, Harms examines the influence of Indigenous, African and European heritage on cultural identity in Aruba, Curaçao and Bonaire. Subjects include traditional healing, medicinal plants, farewell rituals and the Ocho Dia tradition. The report describes practices that have often been dismissed or misunderstood rather than fully documented.
Call to preserve cultural memory
MEP parliamentarian Xiomara Maduro attended the presentation and praised the research. She argued that documenting traditions helps future generations understand their origins and safeguards knowledge passed down within families. Her comments were a call for continued cultural research and publication; the report does not announce a new government programme.
