Keep Our Island Happy: Environmental Awareness from Aruba – Part I
14
VIEWS

Aruba isn’t just known as the One Happy Island for its sunny skies, turquoise waters, and welcoming spirit — it’s also home to a growing environmental movement. While locals and tourists often become fast friends, there’s one issue that requires all hands on deck: protecting Aruba’s delicate ecosystem.

From waste management to ocean care, Aruba is tackling its environmental challenges head-on. Here’s how you can be part of the change — and help keep Aruba beautiful for generations to come.

🌍 The Challenge: Plastic & Waste Pollution

Aruba processes approximately 20 tons of plastic every day, according to Plastic Beach Party, the island’s only recycling facility. With thousands of tourists arriving annually, waste disposal is a pressing concern — especially when trash ends up on beaches, in the ocean, or in the desert-like ‘mondi’.

💡 The Solution: Awareness + Action

Both locals and tourists play a role in protecting Aruba’s environment. Fortunately, many private businesses, nonprofits, and residents are stepping up with eco-friendly practices and sustainable alternatives.

♻️ Eco-Friendly Efforts in Aruba

🛍️ Plastic Bag Ban:
Initiated by Juliet Carvalhal and passed in 2016, Aruba officially banned single-use plastic bags starting January 1, 2017. Bring a reusable bag when shopping or ask for a cardboard box at supermarkets.

🥤 Biodegradable Products:
Thanks to suppliers like ASD Aruba and Tara Eco-Supplies, many restaurants and resorts have switched to eco-friendly straws, containers, and cups.

🔁 Recycling with Plastic Beach Party:
This open recycling facility repurposes plastic waste into useful items — and invites the public to get involved through workshops and cleanups.

🌱 MAGEC Aruba:
The Making Aruba a Greener Environment Club partners with Plastic Beach Party to implement recycling at the University of Aruba, inspiring other schools to follow.

☀️ Alternative Energy & Greener Transport

  • Solar Power: Solar panels now top schools, public buildings, and businesses across Aruba.

  • Wind Power: The Vader Piet Wind Farm provides nearly 20% of the island’s energy needs.

  • EV & Hybrid Cars: With growing charging station availability, electric transport is on the rise.

🏖️ Protecting Aruba’s Beaches & Sea Life

🚫 Beach Rules:
No motorized vehicles, no open fires, and no littering. Aruba’s beaches are public and precious, and preserving them is a shared responsibility.

🪨 Blue Blocks Aruba:
Their blue-and-yellow concrete markers spell out messages like “KEEP OUR BEACH CLEAN” and “DON’T DRIVE ON THE DUNES”, encouraging mindful beach behavior.

🪸 Aruba Reef Care Foundation:
Fighting threats like careless anchoring and plastic waste, this organization defends marine life and coral reefs. Their work protects not just corals, but also sea turtles and fish from injury and death caused by ocean pollution.

🙌 Get Involved & Make a Difference

Whether you’re visiting for a day or staying long-term, you can support a cleaner Aruba. Join a cleanup, refuse single-use plastic, or volunteer with one of the following groups:

  • Plastic Beach Party

  • Government of Aruba

  • Plastic Bag Ban Aruba

  • ASD Aruba

  • Tara Eco-Supplies Aruba

  • MAGEC Aruba

  • Utilities of Aruba

  • Aruba Tourism Authority

  • Blue Blocks Aruba

  • Aruba Reef Care Foundation

Stay tuned for Part II of our Aruba Awareness series to learn more ways you can help!
