ORANJESTAD, ARUBA – Aruba’s tourism industry is on a roll. May 2025 brought a significant 5.3% year-over-year increase in stay-over visitors, totaling 117,125 arrivals, pushing the year-to-date figure to 635,965—up 3.4% compared to the same period last year.

This surge reflects growing demand from key regions, a rebound in cruise tourism, and effective destination marketing that is widening Aruba’s global appeal.

South America Leads Visitor Surge

South America emerged as the top growth region, with a 20.1% spike in visitors compared to May 2024. Standout markets included:

  • Argentina: +155.6% (3,979 visitors)
  • Brazil: +51.8%
  • Uruguay & 🇵🇾 Paraguay: Both with gains over 40%

These gains are credited to improved airlift and targeted marketing strategies, positioning South America as a rising star in Aruba’s tourism strategy.

Cruise Tourism Comes Roaring Back

May also saw a dramatic 36.6% increase in cruise passenger arrivals, reaching 47,361 visitors—well above forecasts thanks to seven additional ship calls. Aruba is on track to welcome over 910,000 cruise tourists in 2025, bolstered by ongoing upgrades to port facilities and shore excursions.

Visitors Spent Over $200 Million in Q1 via Visa

Visa cardholders spent an impressive US$201 million in Q1 2025, an 8.8% increase year-over-year. Top categories included:

  • Dining: $58.1M (+11.2%)
  • Hotels & Lodging: $49.6M (+12.8%)
  • Retail: $43.3M

The average spend per cardholder reached $679, signaling high-value tourism despite a dip in individual transaction size.

Canada’s Comeback Fuels North American Dominance

North America contributed a commanding 78.4% of May arrivals, with the USA growing by 1.7%. However, the standout was Canada, which soared 41.3%, rising from 2,862 to 4,045 visitors. Increased flight availability and travel incentives may be fueling this rise.

European Travel Gains in Quality

While overall European arrivals rose a modest 7.6%, several countries posted notable growth:

  • Italy: +50.7%
  • Sweden: +65.7%
  • Switzerland: +14.5%

Though smaller in numbers, European tourists tend to stay longer and spend more—contributing to sustained revenue in the lodging and dining sectors.

Hotel Metrics Show Continued Strength

  • Total visitor nights: 730,405 (+2.5%)
  • Average Daily Rate (ADR): $277 (vs. $274 in May 2024)
  • Occupancy: 52.9% (up from 51.8%)

These numbers indicate stable growth across all accommodation types, from luxury resorts to smaller boutique properties.

Younger Generations Boost Multigenerational Travel

There’s a notable generational shift in Aruba’s visitor demographics:

  • Gen A (0–11 yrs): +17.0%
  • Gen Z: +13.2%

This points to a rise in family and multigenerational travel, expanding Aruba’s tourism appeal across age groups.

Tourism Credits and Timeshare Data Get a Boost

In accordance with new Balance of Payments standards, Aruba’s timeshare revenues are now classified under “Travel Services”, leading to a 16% increase in Tourism Credits totaling Afl. 4.03 billion (Q1–Q3 2024).

Outlook: Sustainable Momentum

✔ Nearly 21,000 more arrivals YTD vs. 2024
✔ Cruise recovery ahead of projections
✔ Record gains from South America and Canada
✔ Lodging, retail, and food sectors remain robust

With growing diversity in source markets and strong spending patterns, Aruba’s tourism outlook for 2025 continues to shine.
