ORANJESTAD (AAN) – Aruba Cunucu Dog Jonah Goes Viral in the United States after an emotional moment at a Miami Marlins baseball game captured the hearts of millions across social media. The rescue dog, originally from Aruba, became an internet sensation after being spotted watching other dogs receive hot dogs during the team’s popular “Bark at the Park” event while he received none.
As the video spread rapidly across platforms in the United States and Aruba, the Miami Marlins marketing team launched a search to identify the dog and its owner. The heartwarming campaign quickly gained public attention, with many people eager to find the “hot dog dog” featured in the viral clip.
The dog’s owner, Peter Silveira, eventually responded to the team’s social media posts, revealing that the dog’s name is Jonah. He shared that Jonah enjoys chasing squirrels and eating ice cream. Television cameras had captured Jonah patiently watching another dog enjoy a hot dog without attempting to take it himself, making the moment even more endearing.
The family also revealed that Jonah is a Cunucu dog, Aruba’s well-known native mixed-breed dog. Jonah was originally abandoned on the island before being rescued through local animal welfare efforts. With assistance from New Life For Paws Aruba, the dog received veterinary care, the required travel documentation, and was eventually adopted by the Silveira family in Florida.
Jonah’s story has brought international attention to Aruba’s Cunucu dogs and the rescue work carried out by New Life For Paws. American media outlets have highlighted the unique breed while showcasing the foundation’s efforts to rescue abandoned and neglected dogs across Aruba and promote responsible animal care.
After successfully locating Jonah, the Miami Marlins invited him and his family back to LoanDepot Park on July 12, 2026, for a special “Dream Day.” The event will also help raise funds to support additional dog rescue initiatives. Unlike the original Bark at the Park event, Jonah will be the only dog invited, allowing the team to celebrate the now-famous rescue dog with special recognition.
Jonah’s remarkable journey—from an abandoned Cunucu dog in Aruba to a beloved viral sensation in the United States—has been featured by major television networks including ABC News, Fox, Inside Edition, and USA Today, while also attracting millions of views across TikTok, Instagram, X, and his own Instagram account, @jonahthecunucu.
