Burubundu development concerns grow after conpa files formal objection

Fundacion CONPA says it has formally submitted a written objection to Aruba’s Department of Infrastructure and Planning regarding the proposed Burubundu subdivision development near Pos Chiquito.

DIP’s official notice states that the draft Burubundu Development Concerns subdivision plan became available for public inspection on May 29, 2026, under Article 33 of Aruba’s National Ordinance on Spatial Development. The procedure allows interested parties to review the documents and submit their views concerning a proposed subdivision.

CONPA President Simon Waslander and Treasurer Aaron Bislip allege that the documents made available for inspection lacked sufficient initial justification, detailed reasoning and clear authorship information on some maps. The foundation also claims that the process may conflict with spatial-planning rules and accepted principles of transparent public administration. These remain CONPA’s allegations, and no official decision confirming legal violations was identified.

The foundation also questions whether the land’s elevation, coral formations, drainage channels and geological conditions can safely support a development of the proposed scale. CONPA referred to plans involving 762 apartments and 242 houses, while government descriptions have placed the wider development at approximately 850 to 1,000 homes.

CONPA further repeated concerns about possible effects on nearby residents, schools, traffic and wastewater management. It warned that an unsuitable sewage solution could threaten communities near Pos Chiquito and coastal ecosystems. These environmental and property-impact claims have not yet been confirmed through a publicly available technical assessment or official DIP response.

The foundation said it supports solutions to Aruba’s housing shortage but believes the project should proceed only with complete documentation, meaningful community consultation and clear studies addressing traffic, geology, drainage and wastewater treatment. CONPA has previously presented an alternative development vision that it says would provide housing while preserving more natural land.
