SEPPA Raises Concerns Over Teacher Morale in Aruba

ORANJESTAD (AAN) – SEPPA Raises Concerns Over Teacher Morale in Aruba, with the teachers’ organization saying many educators remain discouraged as key education reforms have stalled and several long-standing workplace issues remain unresolved.

In an interview with DIARIO, Magaly Brito of SEPPA said there is currently little motivation among teachers across Aruba’s education sector.

According to Brito, the second phase of a plan designed to improve the working conditions and employment position of education professionals has still not begun, despite originally being expected to start in February or March.

She explained that although the first phase experienced some initial challenges, it ultimately provided benefits for employees working in education.

SEPPA has formally requested a meeting with Minister of Education Gerlien Croes to discuss the delayed implementation of the second phase and other pressing concerns. However, Brito said a meeting date has not yet been scheduled.

“Unfortunately, a date for the meeting has not yet been agreed upon. We are waiting because we want to find solutions to many of the concerns facing people who work in education,” Brito said.

Among the issues the union hopes to address is the continuing shortage of educational staff, which it says places additional pressure on teachers throughout the school system.

Brito also stated that many educators are dissatisfied with the current education system, arguing that teachers believe it is no longer functioning effectively.

Another major concern raised by SEPPA involves workplace safety. Brito said many teachers report feeling increasingly unsafe in schools, particularly those working within the SPO school network.

According to educators, today’s students often face significant social challenges outside the classroom, and those issues can sometimes result in conflicts involving classmates and teachers, creating a more difficult and less secure learning environment.

Brito said these concerns have already been brought to the attention of the Ministry of Education and expressed hope that effective, long-term solutions will be implemented before the start of the new school year.

She warned that without meaningful action, the education sector could face additional challenges in the months ahead.
