ORANJESTAD (AAN) – AHATA CEO Tisa LaSorte says a mismatch between Aruba’s labor market needs and the fields of study chosen by Aruban students abroad may be contributing to the island’s ongoing workforce shortage.
Speaking in an interview, LaSorte explained that labor shortages often lead employers to improve working conditions, increase salaries, and offer better benefits to attract and retain employees. She noted that businesses must become more competitive and creative in order to secure qualified workers.
According to LaSorte, labor shortages are a global issue and cannot be solved simply by improving benefits. As Aruba continues to approve new hotels and tourism developments, the demand for workers will continue to grow.
She emphasized that planning is essential when approving new economic projects because each development creates demand for specific skills and professions.
LaSorte pointed out that some Aruban students study careers abroad that may match their personal interests but do not align with the current needs of Aruba’s labor market. Meanwhile, sectors experiencing labor shortages continue struggling to find qualified workers.
She added that the government is aware of the types of jobs required by approved projects and economic developments, making workforce planning an important part of addressing labor shortages.
LaSorte concluded that Aruba must focus on aligning education, workforce development, and economic planning to ensure enough qualified workers are available for the jobs being created on the island.
