ORANJESTAD (AAN) – Aruba is reaching a significant milestone in its energy transition efforts as the Green Overseas (GO) Program enters its final phase after ten months of intensive work.

Led by Minister of Finance, Economic Affairs, and the Primary Sector Geoffrey Wever, the initiative aims to accelerate the transition from fuel-powered government vehicles to electric vehicles. The project, titled Reduction of Carbon Emissions and Fuel Costs in the Aruba Government Vehicle Fleet, received €190,000 in funding from the European Union.

The project is managed by Expertise France and implemented by German energy systems company Energynautics GmbH. The initiative is being carried out in collaboration with DEACI, DOW, and ELMAR to ensure a sustainable and responsible transition that delivers tangible benefits for Aruba.

The program supports the government’s goal of achieving a sustainable energy transition. Its objectives include reducing carbon dioxide emissions, improving public health by lowering harmful air pollutants, decreasing dependence on imported fossil fuels, and protecting Aruba’s economy from fluctuations in global oil prices.

The European Union is also using Aruba as a pilot project that can serve as an example for other small islands and overseas territories around the world. This recognition highlights Aruba’s commitment to sustainable development and its ambition to become a leader in energy transition initiatives.

As the project approaches completion, the government is preparing to receive the final deliverables from Energynautics. These include a detailed transition strategy for electrifying most government vehicles, procurement guidelines for new electric vehicles, and a battery management plan to ensure sustainable handling of used batteries.

Earlier analyses conducted under the project indicated that departments such as DEZHI could achieve a 15 percent reduction in Total Cost of Ownership through fleet electrification.

Minister Wever stated that the project demonstrates how international cooperation and a clear vision can help Aruba lead in sustainable development while reducing costs and creating a cleaner, healthier, and more resilient future for all residents.

The Green Overseas Project will continue to provide updates and implementation plans to citizens and stakeholders in the coming weeks as Aruba moves forward with its long-term sustainability goals.
