ORANJESTAD, Aruba (AAN) – Minister of Public Health Mervin Wyatt-Ras has emphasized that no one should tolerate abuse and that all forms of abuse must be rejected.
Speaking in an interview with Matutino DIARIO, the minister highlighted the importance of protecting Aruba’s elderly population. She explained that many senior citizens live alone, while others live with their children and sometimes become victims of elder abuse.
According to Wyatt-Ras, some elderly individuals have their pension money taken from them and are not provided with adequate food. Others experience physical or psychological abuse. She also noted that people suffering from Alzheimer’s disease can become vulnerable when caregivers fail to understand their condition or do not properly address their needs, leading to neglect or mistreatment.
The minister further expressed concern about elderly residents who live alone and lack a support network to help them with daily tasks such as grocery shopping and obtaining food.
To address these challenges, the Department for Senior Citizens continues its work to support and protect older adults. Wyatt-Ras stated that plans are being prepared for additional assistance measures, including a shelter initiative. Personnel have already been assigned to assess cases, identify problems, and provide help to elderly individuals facing abuse, neglect, or difficult living conditions.
