ORANJESTAD: Public discourse regarding the balance between economic development, environmental protection, and affordable housing has intensified following recent criticism of a condominium project in Rooi Santo, Noord.
A Facebook post criticizing the development in Rooi Santo has drawn significant attention, with residents questioning how permits were granted for areas important for natural drainage. While the project’s slogan is “bringing people and nature together,” critics describe the initiative as “greenwashing.” The author of the post argues that large-scale condominium developments replace natural areas and offer little benefit to local residents. Specific concerns were raised that reducing natural water channels could increase the risk of flooding in vulnerable neighborhoods.
