Chaos at Bogotá Airport After Flights to Aruba Are Canceled

ORANJESTAD (AAN):
The flight cancellations that occurred on Saturday did not only affect airlines operating from the United States and Europe, but also flights originating from Central and Latin American countries.

Images from El Dorado International Airport in Bogotá, Colombia, showed significant chaos as passengers crowded departure areas awaiting information on whether their flights to Aruba would operate. Many of the Aruba-bound flights were fully booked, as large numbers of travelers were returning after spending the New Year and Easter holiday period in Colombia.

Ultimately, the flights to Aruba were canceled, leaving many passengers stranded. Concerns quickly arose, as schools were set to resume and many travelers feared they would be unable to return to the island on time.

Given its operational flexibility, Avianca Airlines initially decided to increase capacity by adding extra flights. Instead of the usual two daily flights from Bogotá to Aruba, Avianca scheduled four flights on Sunday. Two additional flights — AV-5052 and AV-5054 — were added to transport stranded passengers, allowing workers to return to their jobs and students to prepare for the start of school on Tuesday, January 7, 2026.

Later in the day, however, it was confirmed that one of the additional flights was also canceled. As a result, a total of three Avianca flights from Bogotá arrived in Aruba on Sunday.
