Over the past weekend, several residents and visitors in Aruba were alarmed after a WhatsApp broadcast message began circulating, claiming that a serious crime had occurred at a local hotel and was being “covered up.”
Initial indications suggest the message originated from a local taxi drivers’ group chat. Many recipients quickly noticed that the information was vague, lacked specific details, and provided no factual evidence. Despite this, the message was widely shared, causing unnecessary concern.
In response to the message circulating on social media, the Aruba Police Force took immediate action to verify the claims.
Police confirmed that on Sunday night they became aware of a WhatsApp message alleging that a tourist at a high-rise hotel had allegedly killed their partner and hidden the body in a suitcase.
Authorities immediately launched an investigation and visited the hotel mentioned in the message. After conducting checks on-site, police confirmed that no crime had occurred and that the claims in the message were completely unfounded.
Hotel staff also expressed surprise and confirmed that no such incident had taken place and that the circulating message was not based on any real events.
The Aruba Police Force stated that it regrets the spread of false and negative information, especially when such messages create fear and misinformation within the community.
Police continue to monitor information shared on social media and will take prompt action to clarify and correct false reports that could impact public confidence and Aruba’s reputation.
