88% of Consumers Report Loss of Purchasing Power in Aruba

Parliamentarian Dangui Oduber from the MEP party has highlighted that 88% of Aruban consumers confirm they can now afford less than they could just six months ago. This alarming figure comes from the latest Consumer Confidence Survey by the Central Bank of Aruba (CBA) for the second quarter of 2025, and is supported by findings from the Central Bureau of Statistics (CBS).

Oduber criticized the AVP-Futuro government, saying that their campaign promises to reduce the cost of living and improve purchasing power have not materialized. Instead, inflation remains high, and essential expenses such as electricity, water, gas, and groceries continue to rise.

According to the CBS, in September 2025, an average household in Aruba needed Afl. 6,622 to cover basic living expenses, compared to Afl. 6,109 a year earlier — an 8% annual increase. For single individuals, the cost rose from Afl. 2,944 to Afl. 3,204. These figures underline the growing financial pressure faced by families and low-income individuals.

Oduber added that while Minister Geoffrey Wever has mentioned working on a “purchasing power model” to improve affordability, citizens are growing impatient as prices continue to soar. “Water and electricity tariffs haven’t dropped, fuel prices are higher, and supermarket costs keep climbing,” he said. “The people are suffering, and the government must act urgently to relieve this burden.”
