ORANJESTAD (AAN) – The Government of Aruba has activated a special taskforce to support the revitalization of the city center, aiming to improve safety, livability, and tourism appeal in Oranjestad.
In collaboration with several agencies, including the Department of Nature and Environment (DNM), Bureau City Inspector, Department of Public Works (DOW), and the Aruba Police Force, authorities held a press briefing at the former Music Box building on Elleboogstraat to present progress and next steps.
This initiative is part of a broader vision to transform neglected or deteriorated areas into safe, functional, and attractive spaces for both residents and visitors.
The taskforce, titled “Convivencia: Safe and Human City Centers,” was officially established as part of the government’s 2025–2028 policy plan. Its main objective is to develop and implement an integrated strategy to strengthen public safety, social cohesion, and urban development in Oranjestad and San Nicolas.
Members of the taskforce represent key ministries, ensuring coordinated action across sectors. Their responsibilities include overseeing preventive, social, and security measures, as well as developing a structured action plan for 2025–2027.
The initiative also allows collaboration with external partners such as social organizations, private sector stakeholders, and tourism representatives to ensure a comprehensive and sustainable approach.
The former Music Box building, once a well-known cultural venue, had fallen into disrepair and became a concern for the community. Its transformation now symbolizes a shift from abandonment to opportunity.
According to the government, this project highlights that revitalizing Oranjestad is an ongoing process built on cooperation, sustainability, and commitment to the community.
