DNM Launches Protected Species Database

ORANJESTAD (AAN) – Directie Natuur en Milieu (DNM) has officially launched a Flora and Fauna Database on its website to commemorate the International Day for Biological Diversity (IDB) 2026. The new section features a comprehensive list of locally protected species, providing information to help residents, students, and researchers identify and safeguard Aruba’s unique biodiversity.

The International Day for Biological Diversity is celebrated annually on May 22 to mark the adoption of the Convention on Biological Diversity in 1992. For the 2026 observance, the United Nations established the theme “Acting locally for global impact.” This theme highlights the importance of local initiatives in achieving global biodiversity targets.

By publishing the list of protected species, Aruba contributes directly to the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework (KMGBF), which aims to halt biodiversity loss by 2030. Protecting local flora and fauna is vital for food security, maintaining healthy marine ecosystems, ensuring clean water, regulating the climate, and supporting the island’s economic stability.
