Pastor Marcel Balootje has addressed the evolving challenges facing family communication in an increasingly digital society. Speaking on the impact of digitization following the COVID-19 pandemic, Balootje highlighted how the shift towards messaging applications has reduced face-to-face interactions, creating a concerning disconnect among family members living in the same household.
While technology maintains a connection, the pastor argues that it often lacks the depth necessary for true understanding. He expressed concern that reliance on text and voice messages prevents individuals from offering physical comfort or recognizing changes in a loved one’s physical state. Balootje described a growing trend where family members live “divided” lives within one home, unable to speak on behalf of one another or ask for help when needed.
Citing scriptural references including Philippians 4:8-9, Balootje urged the community to focus on virtues that foster unity, such as forgiveness and grace, rather than defensiveness. He emphasized the importance of visiting the elderly and those with limited mobility, arguing that physical presence remains irreplaceable. The pastor concluded that by prioritizing direct, gracious communication, families can repair fractured relationships and ensure a more peaceful domestic environment across Aruba.
