A proposal to establish a Matividiri Protected Nature Area was officially presented to Prime Minister Mike Eman by representatives of Stichting Happy Cadushi Nature Reserve during a meeting focused on environmental conservation and biodiversity protection.
As the minister responsible for nature and environmental protection, Prime Minister Eman received a delegation from the foundation, which submitted a petition requesting official protected status for a section of Matividiri.
During the meeting, the organization provided an updated report detailing the flora and fauna found in Rooi di Matividiri and surrounding areas. The report highlights the exceptional ecological value of the region and supports the creation of a Matividiri Protected Nature Area.
According to the latest research, Matividiri is home to 98 recorded species, including 59 plant species and 39 animal species. The foundation noted that this makes the area one of the most biologically diverse natural locations documented in Aruba to date.
Researchers also identified several plant and insect species that had not previously been recorded in the area, further strengthening the case for environmental protection.
Stichting Happy Cadushi Nature Reserve renewed a request first submitted in 2022, emphasizing that Matividiri occupies an important ecological corridor between Rooi Prikichi and Arikok National Park.
The foundation believes that designating a Matividiri Protected Nature Area would significantly contribute to biodiversity conservation efforts and strengthen Aruba’s network of protected natural habitats.
During discussions, representatives also expressed appreciation for several environmental initiatives currently supported by the government, including reforestation projects at Spaans Lagoen, environmental improvements along Henny Eman Boulevard near the airport, and the Aima Coa project within Arikok National Park.
Prime Minister Eman thanked the foundation for its dedication and ongoing commitment to preserving Aruba’s natural environment.
He emphasized that community participation plays a crucial role in achieving a more sustainable and resilient Aruba. According to Eman, cooperation between government agencies and environmental organizations remains essential for protecting the island’s natural resources for future generations.
Supporters of the Matividiri Protected Nature Area initiative hope that official designation will help safeguard the region’s unique biodiversity while promoting long-term environmental sustainability throughout Aruba.
