Zuriel Celaire received a four-year prison sentence in Aruba, with two years suspended, after a court found him guilty of assault with a weapon, firearm possession and threats. The suspended portion carries a three-year probation period.
Court orders strict probation conditions
The ruling requires Celaire to remain at home from 6 p.m. to 6 a.m., wear an electronic ankle monitor continuously for nine months and undergo psychological treatment. He must also follow directives from Aruba’s Probation Service.
The Public Prosecutor had sought a four-year term and conditional court-ordered psychiatric treatment. The judge declined that measure, finding insufficient grounds in the evaluation reports, but adopted the probation service’s recommended monitoring and treatment conditions.
Charges followed an armed confrontation
The case concerned a meeting at EPB San Nicolas where another person in Celaire’s car struck one victim with a firearm and pointed the weapon at a second person. The court held Celaire responsible for the armed assault and rejected his account that the victims had set him up.
The judge also awarded Afl. 1,000 of a requested Afl. 7,000 compensation claim for emotional harm. Details of the ruling and sentence were reported by EA News Aruba.
