Oduber Criticizes High Interest Rate Choice

Parliamentarian Dangui Oduber has strongly criticized Minister of Finance Wever for selecting a 25% maximum interest rate for the upcoming National Ordinance on Credit Regulation. During a recent Parliament session, the Minister chose the highest of three proposed options, which included 18% and 22%.

Oduber accused the Minister of lacking empathy for the Aruban people, contrasting the decision with previous campaign promises to restore purchasing power. He argued that choosing the highest allowable rate burdens consumers seeking loans for essential goods like appliances and electronics. When a motion was proposed to lower the rate, the Minister indicated he would not follow it.

The Parliamentarian questioned why the government rejected the opportunity to provide financial relief through a lower interest cap. Oduber stated that the decision clearly demonstrates who is working for the people and who is adding to their financial burdens.
