AVP Parliamentarian John Hart has formally requested a “vragenuur” and submitted a series of questions to the Minister of Justice regarding the Korps Politie Aruba’s (KPA) current capacity to handle citizen reports. Hart stated that various complaints received from the community suggest potential capacity issues within the police force that may be affecting the timely processing of cases.
Asserting that a strong rule of law relies on the public’s confidence that their complaints will be treated with professionalism and within a reasonable time, the parliamentarian is seeking specific information. He asked for details on the number of reports that may have gone untreated or face significant backlogs, as well as the reasons behind any delays or the archiving of cases.
Furthermore, Hart is requesting clarity on what actions the government is taking to strengthen the KPA’s operational capacity. He emphasized the importance of ensuring the police force has sufficient human and operational resources to meet existing demands and assist victims. “Trust in the justice system is essential for a democratic society. If citizens do not have the assurance that their report will be treated adequately, that can weaken trust in the government and the institutions responsible for maintaining law and order,” Hart said.
Hart concluded by noting that citizens have a right to know that their reports are taken seriously and that competent authorities have the capacity to act according to the law. He stressed that transparency and accountability are fundamental to maintaining confidence in Aruba’s democratic institutions.
