ORANJESTAD (AAN) – The fatal ATV accident that occurred last Friday near Boca Indjeco, also known as Blackstone Beach, has triggered strong public reactions across Aruba.
The incident involved a 39-year-old American tourist who died during an ATV excursion while visiting Aruba with friends to celebrate Mother’s Day weekend.
Following the tragedy, renewed public debate has emerged regarding the continued operation of ATV and UTV vehicles across the island.
Environmental experts and residents have raised concerns for years about the impact these vehicles have on Aruba’s nature areas, including damage to wildlife habitats such as the nesting areas of the Aruba Shoco owl.
Critics also argue that ATV and UTV tours create excessive dust, noise, environmental damage, and safety risks for both visitors and residents.
Experts noted that these vehicles are designed with a high center of gravity, increasing the risk of overturning on rough terrain, steep roads, and rocky areas.
Several residents questioned why the dangerous route leading to Boca Indjeco continues to be included in ATV excursion tours.
Many community members are now calling on the Aruba government to review regulations surrounding ATV tourism before additional fatal incidents affect the island’s international reputation.
