DIMP Urges Public to Seek Information Early to Avoid Tax Problems

The Director of the Department of Taxes (DIMP), Mrs. Luenne Gomez-Pieters, is calling on taxpayers to proactively contact the department to obtain accurate information and prevent tax-related problems from escalating.

In an interview with DIARIO, Gomez-Pieters emphasized that individuals who lack sufficient knowledge about their tax obligations should reach out to DIMP to clarify what applies to their specific situation. She warned that sole proprietors, in particular, are personally responsible for tax debts, which—if left unresolved—can result in late penalties and legal seizure of assets. These measures may include the confiscation of homes, vehicles, electronic equipment, and other property, even items located on shared premises.

She also stressed the importance for small businesses, such as kiosks, to understand their obligations clearly. Gomez-Pieters highlighted that under the Kleineondernemersregeling (KOR), businesses with an annual turnover below 50,000 florins are not required to pay BBO or submit BBO forms.

According to the director, DIMP’s goal is for taxpayers to seek guidance before matters become urgent. She acknowledged that the department currently faces limitations in handling phone calls, with only seven staff members assigned to telephone support, which can lead to delays in response times.

Despite these challenges, DIMP continues to invest in staff training, providing courses to improve service quality. The department also closes on certain Monday afternoons for internal training purposes. Gomez-Pieters asked the public for patience during these periods, while strongly encouraging taxpayers not to avoid contact.

She concluded by reiterating that timely communication with the Department of Taxes is essential to obtain correct information and prevent tax issues from growing into serious legal and financial problems.
