ORANJESTAD, Aruba (AAN) — A traffic law petition Aruba Parliament bearing more than 7,000 signatures was officially delivered to Parliament, calling for urgent changes to Aruba’s Traffic Law following a fatal hit-and-run accident.

The petition was presented by the children of Josely, who lost her life on January 4 after being struck by a vehicle on Boulevard in front of the Renaissance Mall. The driver fled the scene without stopping.

Parliament President Marlon Sneek described the petition as a clear signal from the public.
“This is a clear message that the people want to see change,” Sneek stated.

He explained that Parliament has already held two meetings on the matter, during which the Minister of Justice was questioned about the government’s response. According to Sneek, the minister indicated that a commission has been established to provide recommendations related to traffic law reform.

Sneek also referred to an existing legislative initiative by the MEP parliamentary faction, which has been under development for several years and specifically addresses fatal traffic accidents. He noted that the Raad van Advies has already issued its comments on the proposed law, and Parliament recently received responses to those recommendations.

The Parliament President emphasized that the draft law is now formally before Parliament. The next step will be a central parliamentary meeting, allowing members to ask questions. Once those questions are addressed, the proposal will move forward to a public parliamentary session for debate and consideration.

A total of 7,694 signatures were collected over a period of five days, reflecting strong public support for changes to Aruba’s traffic legislation.
