ORANJESTAD (AAN) – During the recent observance of World Day for Cultural Diversity for Dialogue and Development, Parliamentarian Drs. Shailiny Tromp-Lee of the Fraccion MEP underscored the importance of inclusion and social cohesion within Aruba.
Tromp-Lee remarked that with over 100 nationalities residing and working on the island, the day holds profound meaning. She stated that Aruba structurally represents a living example in the Caribbean where diverse cultures, languages, and traditions coexist peacefully. She further explained that this cultural fusion not only enriches national identity but also powers the labor force behind the island’s primary economic pillar, tourism.
While celebrating the island’s varied heritage, the Parliamentarian stressed that diversity alone is not enough, referencing warnings from UNESCO experts. She emphasized that for true inclusion to exist, society must be built on social equality and equal opportunities. Tromp-Lee called for the conversation to move beyond superficial aspects to ensure that the rights of the multicultural workforce are protected and that the education system supports the youth’s social development.
Concluding her statement, Tromp-Lee asserted that the goal is to balance openness to the world with safeguarding Aruban identity. She affirmed that diversity should serve as a unifying strength rather than a cause for division, urging continued efforts toward a society centered on cohesion, justice, and respect.
