SETAR has announced its preparation of Aruba for the era of “smart cities” and Internet of Things (IoT) technology. The telecommunications company is working to introduce new systems that will allow more devices and apparatus to communicate automatically via the internet. SETAR Director Roland Croes stated that these innovations will open the path for increased automation, digital control, and intelligent services across the island.
Croes explained that IoT enables the use of sensors and devices that consume minimal energy to transmit information via a dedicated LTE Cat M1 network. This technology is intended for use in diverse areas, including healthcare, parking management, automated street lighting, septic tank monitoring, and water control systems. The system is designed to utilize very low power and low data, thereby opening significant new possibilities for the local infrastructure.
“You can place a sensor with a battery that lasts 10 years, and the device can continue sending signals and monitoring information,” Croes declared. He highlighted that the network is essential for the development of smart cities, smart metering, and various other modern services SETAR plans to introduce in Aruba.
Furthermore, SETAR has developed solutions for “smart fleet management” in collaboration with the international firm Geotab. This initiative will permit companies to monitor and control their vehicles, maintenance schedules, routes, and overall fleet usage through digital sensors. The new technology will function on the existing LTE network and will subsequently connect to future 5G networks. The objective is to achieve higher efficiency, reduced battery consumption, and expanded connectivity for smart devices.
