Aruba’s Public Prosecutor’s Office says it imposed settlement payments of up to Afl. 15,000 in several recent cases involving suspected human smuggling and illegal employment.
Businesses and individuals received settlements
The prosecutor said cases involved allegations of helping people enter Aruba unlawfully, providing accommodation to people staying illegally and employing people who were not lawfully present. The settlements were imposed on companies and private individuals during prosecutor-led hearings in recent months.
Other cases may still go to court
The office said the conduct can undermine policy against illegal residence and employment and can harm both foreign nationals and the local community. It urged employers and landlords to understand the rules before arranging travel, housing or work. While some Aruba illegal work cases can be resolved through a settlement, prosecutors said suspects may also be summoned before a judge. The source did not identify defendants or provide a total number of cases.
