The Aruba Oil Opportunity Discussion has gained momentum following a parliamentary meeting where members debated whether the island should reconsider possibilities in the oil sector.
The meeting was urgently requested by the MEP faction, which expressed concern that it took nearly three months for the discussion to be scheduled. According to the opposition, Aruba must at least evaluate new opportunities arising from recent geopolitical changes, particularly developments in Venezuela.
The Aruba Oil Opportunity Discussion focuses on whether the island should revisit the potential use of the former refinery in San Nicolas. Historically, Aruba played a major role in global oil refining, but in recent years, the government has shifted toward a sustainable and clean energy strategy.
Prime Minister Evelyn Wever-Croes acknowledged that she previously believed the refinery chapter was closed due to repeated failed attempts to restart operations. However, she noted that recent changes have opened the door to new possibilities.
“As long as it is a refinery that complies with environmental standards, creates jobs, and supports economic development for Aruba—especially San Nicolas—we must at least explore the opportunity,” she stated.
The Aruba Oil Opportunity Discussion also highlights the importance of balancing economic growth with environmental responsibility. The government has already committed to transitioning away from traditional oil refining toward sustainable industries, including renewable energy and innovation hubs.
Minister Arthur Dowers indicated that the government is willing to explore the possibilities, although no concrete plan has been presented yet. This has led to calls for a structured strategy to evaluate potential benefits and risks.
Supporters of revisiting the oil sector argue that new global conditions, including changes in Venezuela’s oil industry, may provide economic opportunities for Aruba. In the past, Aruba’s location near Venezuela made it a strategic hub for refining and exporting crude oil.
However, critics warn that returning to oil could conflict with Aruba’s long-term vision of sustainability and environmental protection.
The Aruba Oil Opportunity Discussion reflects a broader national debate about the island’s economic direction—whether to remain committed to green development or reconsider industrial opportunities that could generate jobs and revenue.
As discussions continue, the government is expected to further analyze the situation and determine whether exploring oil-related opportunities aligns with Aruba’s future goals.
