ORANJESTAD (AAN) – Aruba Health Department Shares Safety Tips for National Clean-Up Day as the government and the Department of Public Health encourage volunteers to protect their health while participating in the island-wide cleanup campaign on Saturday, July 25.
Officials emphasized that keeping Aruba clean is a shared responsibility, but participants should also take the necessary precautions to prevent dehydration, injuries, insect bites, and other accidents during cleanup activities.
Protect Yourself from the Sun
The Department of Public Health advises volunteers to apply sunscreen with SPF 35 or higher and reapply it regularly throughout the day.
Participants are also encouraged to wear a hat, along with light-coloured long-sleeved clothing and long pants, to reduce exposure to the sun.
Stay Hydrated
Residents should drink water frequently, even if they do not feel thirsty.
The department recommends limiting beverages containing caffeine, excessive sugar, or alcohol, as these can contribute to dehydration.
Prevent Insect Bites
Participants are encouraged to use insect repellent and wear clothing that covers their arms and legs.
They should also remain alert for insects or animals that may be hiding beneath waste, grass, or other debris.
Prevent Injuries
The department recommends wearing durable work gloves and protective footwear while collecting waste.
Volunteers should avoid handling broken glass, metal, sharp objects, or hazardous materials with bare hands.
Protect Your Eyes
Safety glasses are recommended when working in areas where dust, broken glass, branches, or other debris could cause eye injuries.
Lift Objects Safely
When lifting heavy items, participants should bend their knees, keep their back straight, and ask for assistance whenever an object is too heavy to move safely.
Practice Good Hygiene
Volunteers should avoid touching their face, eating, or drinking while wearing dirty gloves.
After completing cleanup activities, they should wash their hands thoroughly with soap and water.
Respond Quickly to Injuries
If an injury occurs, participants should stop working immediately, clean the wound with water, and seek first aid or medical attention if necessary.
The Department of Public Health stressed that proper preparation and prevention are essential to ensuring that National Clean-Up Day is both safe and successful.
Held under the slogan “P’ami. P’abo. Pa nos tur.” (“For me. For you. For all of us.”), the National Day to Care for Aruba encourages residents, businesses, schools, clubs, foundations, and community organizations to work together in cleaning neighborhoods while promoting long-term environmental responsibility across the island.
