The Aruba Betico Day dispute 2026 intensified when Parliamentarian Xiomara Maduro called on Minister of Labor Wendrick Cicilia to issue a public apology to all members of the MEP (Movimiento Electoral di Pueblo) party for comments he made after the government’s controversial holiday announcement.
Earlier in January, Minister Cicilia issued a ministerial decree adjusting the official observance of Betico Day, which in 2026 fell on a Sunday, to Monday, January 26. The change, intended to allow greater public participation and respect for the holiday, sparked confusion in the business community due to short notice and unclear communication. The government later clarified that while Sunday remained the official holiday, the additional Monday off was offered only to civil servants, not mandated for the private sector—a situation that many found confusing and disruptive.
During a press conference meant to correct the situation, Cicilia did not acknowledge the confusion or take responsibility for it. Instead, he reportedly made remarks perceived as disparaging toward MEP members, accusing political opponents of being unable to read or understand information correctly. These comments drew strong criticism from Parliamentarian Xiomara Maduro, who described them as “unacceptably low” and inappropriate for a national leader.
Maduro stated that rather than defending his error, Minister Cicilia’s remarks insulted MEP supporters and lowered the tone of public discourse. She emphasized that in the Aruba Betico Day dispute 2026, which touched on an important national holiday honoring Gilberto “Betico” Croes, respectful communication is essential. Betico Day commemorates the leader who championed Aruba’s autonomy and holds deep cultural significance for the nation.
Maduro urged Cicilia to apologize to the people of Aruba and specifically to MEP members for his unprofessional and offensive language. She argued that mistakes in governance should be corrected with accountability and respect, especially on the eve of a day that celebrates national unity and identity.
Supporters of the call for an apology say clearer communication and a respectful response would help restore public trust after the confusion over the holiday decision.
