ORANJESTAD, Aruba — Horacio Oduber Hospital says Aruba undocumented care costs have left approximately Afl. 29 million in outstanding bills and that it is preparing legal action against the government.
Hospital says essential care remains available
Director Jacco Vroegop told DIARIO that the institution continues to provide urgent care regardless of a patient’s origin or insurance status. He said the unresolved question is which public mechanism should pay for that care.
According to Vroegop, the amount represents actual treatment costs for undocumented patients. He said the number of such patients has increased over time, including amid conditions in Venezuela.
Legal case is being prepared
The director said the hospital has discussed the issue for years without obtaining a structural solution and is preparing a case against the Country of Aruba. No filing date or case number was provided. He said a transparent mechanism is needed so costs are not taken from funding for AZV-insured residents.
