AVP parliamentarian Otami Thomasia has submitted questions to Health Minister Melvin Wyatt-Ras about the Aruba midwife shortage, according to Diario’s October 31 report. The questions follow a meeting this week with the midwives’ association.
Staffing concerns raised at the meeting
According to information presented at that meeting, the number of midwives has fallen from eight to four, with concern that only three could remain by September 2027. Those figures are attributed to the meeting account; they are not an independently verified staffing census.
Continuity of care and working conditions
Thomasia said maternity care must remain available around the clock and warned that fewer professionals would mean heavier workloads and less recovery time. He is seeking clarification about obstacles facing midwives, AZV’s position and the measures the government intends to take. The report describes parliamentary questions and calls for action, not an approved staffing solution.
