ORANJESTAD, Aruba — Playa Film Festival Aruba will return for its sixth edition at Caribbean Cinemas later this month, showcasing films from Aruba, Curaçao, the Netherlands and other locations while introducing free online screenings for audiences around the world.

Organized by Fundacion CINEARUBA, this year’s festival will place particular attention on productions connected to Studio Caribe, a Netherlands Film Fund initiative that supported the development of several short films from Aruba and Curaçao.

The three-day cinema program runs from August 27 through August 29, 2026.

Aruban Films Featured on Opening Night

The festival opens Thursday, August 27, with films produced through Studio Caribe.

Two productions from Aruba will be presented: Adrift Wak Leau by Velvet Zoe Ramos and E Peso di Mundo by Juan Francisco Pardo.

The Curaçao production Mane Hòmbu by Ango Laurens will also be screened.

The evening will additionally include previews of two short films, giving audiences a broader look at the productions available during this year’s festival.

Following the screenings, filmmakers will participate in a question-and-answer session where members of the audience can learn more about their creative process and productions.

Kingdom of Shorts Returns

On Friday, August 28, Playa Film Festival Aruba will present one of its popular categories, Kingdom of Shorts.

The program features a collection of short fiction films from across the Kingdom and beyond.

This year’s selections include Fort Buku by Loëlle Monsanto from the Netherlands. The film was selected by the festival jury to receive the Kingdom of Shorts Jury Award for Best Short Film.

Other selections include On the Eve/Bispu by Elizabeth Francisco of Curaçao, Hobi by Aramis Garcia Gonzalez from the Netherlands, The Day I Met You from Curaçao and A Mother’s Touch from the Netherlands.

The short-film program provides filmmakers with an opportunity to present their work to Aruba audiences while encouraging greater exchange between Caribbean and European film communities.

Students Share Their Love for Aruba

Saturday, August 29, will feature the School Short Story competition along with another presentation of the Kingdom of Shorts program.

The School Short Story program will showcase productions created by students of Maria College MAVO.

Their films focus on their connection to and love for Aruba, providing young filmmakers with a platform to share local stories through cinema.

Saturday evening will also feature another screening of the Studio Caribe program.

The youth component forms part of CineAruba’s broader efforts to support film education and provide emerging creators with opportunities to develop and present their work.

Festival Introduces Free Online Films

A major addition to Playa Film Festival Aruba this year is the opportunity for audiences to watch selected films online completely free.

A collection of feature films, short fiction films and documentaries will be available digitally during the festival.

The online program will allow people outside Aruba to participate in the event while increasing international exposure for filmmakers.

Online viewers will also have the opportunity to vote for the festival’s audience award.

The digital component expands the festival beyond traditional cinema screenings and allows Aruba’s film event to reach viewers internationally.

Sixth Edition Supports Caribbean Cinema

Playa Film Festival grew from several CineAruba initiatives designed to strengthen local film culture and provide opportunities for emerging filmmakers.

The festival now combines screenings, competitions, filmmaker discussions, networking and educational opportunities.

With Aruban productions, regional filmmakers, student-created stories and free digital screenings included in this year’s program, Playa Film Festival Aruba continues working to strengthen the island’s film community while connecting it with Caribbean and international cinema.

The sixth edition will take place from August 27 through August 29, 2026, with physical screenings at Caribbean Cinemas and selected films available online during the festival.
