ORANJESTAD (AAN) – ATA Focuses on Stabilizing Tourism Instead of Growth as Aruba Tourism Authority (ATA) CEO Ronella Croes says the island’s tourism strategy is shifting toward maintaining sustainable visitor levels rather than pursuing continuous growth.

Speaking about Aruba’s tourism performance, Croes acknowledged that periods of high visitor arrivals can place pressure on the island’s infrastructure and popular attractions.

She noted that congestion is especially noticeable when cruise ships are in port, as large numbers of visitors often arrive at the same locations simultaneously. However, she emphasized that these situations do not occur every day.

Strategy Centers on Stability

According to Croes, ATA plays an active role in managing Aruba’s tourism product by providing information, supporting visitor management, and implementing measures aligned with the organization’s management plan and budget.

She explained that both cruise tourism and stay-over tourism are now being guided by a strategy focused on stability rather than continued expansion.

According to Croes, ATA, the Aruba Ports Authority (APA), and the Ministry of Tourism are working together to determine what a sustainable level of cruise tourism should look like in numerical terms.

Rather than focusing on increasing visitor numbers year after year, the objective is to stabilize tourism while maintaining a high-quality visitor experience.

Strong Tourism Performance Continues

Despite the focus on stabilization, Croes said Aruba’s tourism sector continues to perform strongly.

According to figures she shared:

  • Stay-over tourism increased by 11% during the first six months of 2026 compared with the same period in 2025.
  • Cruise tourism recorded 7% growth during the first half of the year.
  • According to the Aruba Hotel and Tourism Association (AHATA), hotel revenues from guest stays increased by 12% compared with the first six months of the previous year.

Croes described these figures as important indicators of a healthy and competitive tourism industry.

Aruba Remains a Preferred Destination

Croes said the results demonstrate that Aruba continues to perform exceptionally well compared with many other destinations in the Caribbean.

She noted that the island remains a preferred destination for international visitors for a variety of reasons, resulting in what she described as a “luxury challenge” of managing sustained tourism demand.

According to Croes, current indicators suggest that Aruba’s tourism sector is expected to remain strong throughout the rest of the year.

Emphasis on Sustainable Tourism

According to the CEO, the island’s long-term objective is to balance economic benefits with responsible tourism management.

By prioritizing stable visitor levels instead of unlimited growth, ATA aims to reduce pressure on infrastructure and attractions while preserving Aruba’s tourism product and maintaining a positive experience for both residents and visitors.
