Aruba wage plans remain a government priority, Prime Minister Mike Eman and Tourism, Transport and Labour Minister Wendrick Cicilia said after meeting VVD parliamentary leader Ruben Brekelmans, according to 24ora’s report.
Eman says an increase is necessary
Eman said the government remained willing to discuss possible compensation for the private sector, while maintaining that the minimum wage needed to rise. He pointed to workers in housekeeping, kitchens and maintenance whose pay, he argued, had not shared sufficiently in tourism’s economic gains.
Cicilia cites purchasing-power analysis
Cicilia referred to analysis by Economisch Bureau Amsterdam when discussing inflation and the purchasing power of lower-paid workers. The account reports the ministers’ position following their meeting; it does not announce an enacted wage increase, a start date or a completed compensation agreement.
