ORANJESTAD (AAN) – Animal Welfare Alliance Aruba (AWA) is making an urgent appeal to the community to take advantage of its free sterilization campaign for dogs and cats.
Ilona Henriquez, a volunteer with Animal Welfare Alliance Aruba (AWA) and Nine Lives Aruba Foundation, explained in an interview with Matutino DIARIO that several foundations are working together through a clinic that provides sterilization services for pets. The campaign began last week and is continuing this week.
The clinic will temporarily close next week before reopening, and services will also be available for several weeks in July. Residents who own dogs or cats and would like them sterilized can receive the service completely free of charge. Transportation is also available for those who need assistance getting their animals to the clinic.
Appointments can be arranged through the organizations’ social media platforms or via WhatsApp at 593-8390.
The campaign focuses on both owned and stray animals, with the goal of reducing the growing population of dogs and cats living on Aruba’s streets. Henriquez noted that the issue is especially significant among stray cats, which often go unnoticed because they are more active at night.
She explained that the foundations have received reports of large colonies of stray cats across the island and emphasized the importance of controlling the population through sterilization.
AWA is also asking residents to report locations where large groups of stray dogs or cats are present. The organization maintains a list of colonies and areas requiring attention and works to determine whether animals have already been sterilized before scheduling assistance.
The initiative aims to improve animal welfare and reduce the number of stray animals living under difficult conditions throughout Aruba.
